Crave Mexico Itinerary
-
Day 1 - Mexico City
Bienvenidos or welcome to Mexico City! Mexico City has unparalleled culinary diversity, where traditional Mexican flavors mingle with international influences to create a vibrant gastronomic scene. From street food stalls serving up iconic tacos and tamales to upscale restaurants reimagining Mexican cuisine with innovative twists, the city offers something to satisfy every palate and budget. Exploring Mexico City's bustling markets, historic cantinas, and acclaimed eateries provides a culinary journey that celebrates the depth and richness of Mexican gastronomy.
Once you have provided Crave Travel with your flight itinerary, we will schedule a driver to meet you at the airport and escort you to the hotel. Be sure your flight arrives by 3:00pm.
We will get to know one another with Welcome Cocktails at 6pm.
Tonight we are entertained with an indulgence of our favorite Mexican staple... TACOS… for a Mexico City taco tour, tasting numerous tacos from different vendors in the city.
-
Day 2 - Mexico City
Let’s start the day with a tour around La Merced Market, one the largest and oldest markets in all of Mexico City, a place where we will try some local bites and where you can explore for weeks and still not have seen it all.
Once we have had our fill of tacos and exploring we will head to the Zocalo, Templo Mayor, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Palace of Fine Arts.
And of course we need to end our day with a delicious dinner at Contramar, one of the cities best fresh fish restaurants. Contramar was founded by Gabriela Cámara in 1998. The restaurant was created with the vision of offering high-quality seafood dishes in a casual yet elegant setting. It quickly gained popularity among locals and visitors alike for its focus on fresh ingredients and inventive recipes.
-
Day 3 - Mexico City
Join us today in exploring the Polanco neighborhood where we will experience the food stands and trucks like the locals do.
Following our food truck brunch, we head to Coyoacan, the famous neighborhood where Frida Kahlo lived and yes, of course, we will visit her beautiful home and take a stroll around the streets of Coyoacan where aside from learning about the history we will have the opportunity to try some traditional churros.
To cap off the day we will have dinner at Rosetta. Rosetta is a renowned restaurant owned by Elena Reygadas, situated in the vibrant Roma Norte neighborhood of Mexico City. Rosetta has received widespread acclaim from both local and international critics. It has been featured in numerous culinary publications and has earned prestigious awards for its exceptional cuisine and ambiance.
For those who would want a little more, we will venture for cocktails at Limantur, a famous cocktail bar after dinner.
-
Day 4 - Oaxaca
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before we depart beautiful Mexico City and fly to Oaxaca.
Oaxaca is a must-visit foodie destination with rich culinary heritage, which blends indigenous traditions with Spanish influences to create a diverse and vibrant gastronomic scene. From its renowned moles and tlayudas to its delicious street food and mezcal, Oaxaca offers a tantalizing array of flavors and textures that showcase the region's agricultural bounty and cultural diversity.
Once we arrive in Oaxaca we will tackle the streets for our city tour where we will visit markets, traditional neighborhoods, temples, and will have lunch by indulging in all kinds of yummy treats along the way.
You will have the afternoon at leisure before our dinner at Casa Oaxaca, the favorite restaurant in the city. A magical restaurant that overlooks the beautiful Santo Domingo Temple.
-
Day 5 - Oaxaca
Relax this morning as you will have time at leisure to do what you want in this quaint historic city.
We will head to San Martin Tilcajete for lunch. Lunch in San Martin Tilcajete offers the opportunity to savor authentic Oaxacan cuisine in the charming village known for its vibrant artisan community specializing in the craft of alebrijes, whimsical hand-carved and painted wooden sculptures.
Following lunch, we will visit the Jacobo y Maria Angeles Workshop which provides insight into the ancient Zapotec tradition of nahuales, which are spirit animals believed to guide and protect individuals, offering a deeper understanding of the spiritual and cultural significance embedded in Oaxacan artistry and folklore.
Later we will visit the village of Santa Catarina de Minas where the artisanal mezcal factory “La Locura” is located and experience a tasting for the many styles of Mezcal.
Prior to dinner we will make a quick pitstop in the village of San Bartolo Coyotepec to stroll around the small town taking in the many shops that sell the famous black clay pottery of Oaxaca.
Our day will end back in Oaxaca with dinner at a small restaurant called Tlayudas Doña Flavia. This is regarded by many locals as the best place in all of Oaxaca to eat the traditional Tlayudas (often referred to as "Mexican pizzas").
-
Day 6 - Oaxaca
Enjoy another morning at leisure.
Around noon we will drive towards Teotitlan del Valle where we will visit Nueva Vida Weaving. Teotitlan del Valle is a picturesque village nestled in the mountains of Oaxaca, renowned for its rich textile tradition that dates back centuries. At Nueva Vida Weaving, visitors have the opportunity to witness the intricate art of rug weaving firsthand, as skilled artisans, predominantly women, use traditional techniques passed down through generations to create stunning wool rugs dyed with natural pigments sourced from local plants and minerals. The workshop not only showcases the impressive craftsmanship of the weavers but also provides insight into the cultural significance of textiles in Zapotec communities, highlighting the importance of preserving indigenous traditions and supporting sustainable, community-based enterprises. Visitors can also engage with the artisans, learning about their creative process and the stories woven into each unique piece, making it a truly immersive and enriching cultural experience.
After our visIt to Nueva Vida Weaving we will stop at a local restaurant for lunch. In the afternoon we head back to Oaxaca for some additional leisure time to explore the city or relax at our beautiful hotel.
Our farewell dinner will take place at Alfonsina, and we will be trying their amazing tasting menu. Alfonsina is one of the best resaurants in all of Mexico. Their philosophy is to offer each guest the experience of trying homemade food, prepared with ingredients that their producers offer them daily. The cook portions according to the reservations each day which forces them to only purchase what is necessary creating little food waste.
